Sister of missing Bowen man Brett Breeze pleads for answers 10 months on
His belongings were found scattered in bushland but Brett Breeze is still
missing 10 months on in a case clouded by misinformation that has left his loved
ones with agonising questions.
A man who
disappeared from a North Queensland hospital and was never seen again
remains missing 10 months on as his family fights for answers.
Brett Breeze was
reported missing after he left the Bowen hospital on Gregory Street
around 4:30pm on August 19 2025.
His belongings,
including a bible he never travelled without, have since been found but
there’s been no sign of the 180cm tall 43-year-old with auburn hair, a
solid build and blue eyes.
Reflecting on her
brother’s disappearance, which she said was out of character from the
start as he would have usually come home, his younger sister, Amanda
said the case was initially hindered by misinformation received by her
family in the weeks surrounding the search.
“Everyone thought
he was going to Mackay that day from Bowen, we got a phone call saying
he had left the hospital that day,” she said. “We went to the hospital
after we put out a missing persons report because we wanted to know what
he was wearing, what he’d taken with him.
“They couldn’t
tell us anything.
“They said it was
confidential and they didn’t have any cameras to show that he’d left.”
Brett, a Bowen
local, had been on medication to support his mental health since he was
14, and the family was concerned he hadn’t taken it in the three days
leading to his disappearance.
“I was really
worried for him, if anyone would hurt him, if he was acting
differently,” she explained. More than a week after Brett left Bowen
Hospital, police received a report of Brett’s description, which Amanda
claimed was different to what Bowen Hospital had previously stated.
“It just put us
all in the wrong direction of being able to find him,” she said.
During a search
with State Emergency Service, Amanda and the crew found some of Brett’s
belongings including his phone, IDs, dirty shoes and his bible at a
reserve which lines Queens Road and Kings Beach Road in Bowen – but
there was no Brett. Almost a year since he went missing, Amanda said the
hardest part was the constant wondering where he could be.
“Some people tell
me really random stuff, what they think might have happened, or who
might’ve done something, and I’ll tell the police because you just never
know,” she said.
“I don’t think
there’s anything they can do unless someone tells them something.
“The most
important thing is that he is still missing, he could be out there
somewhere.”
The Mackay
Hospital and Health Service, which oversees the Bowen Hospital, was
contacted but spokesperson stated they were unable to comment on
individual patient matters due to privacy considerations.
Anyone with
information is encouraged to contact police.
