Family fears missing Geelong father, Adam Johnson, may have been killed over drug debt

Fresh details have emerged into the final days of a missing Geelong father-of-three amid fears he may have been killed over a drug debt.

Fresh details have emerged into the final days of a missing Geelong dad presumed dead after he vanished without a trace four months ago.

Adam Johnson, 38, was last seen alive walking along Bellerine St in central Geelong at 12.30am on April 27, with his distraught family revealing they fear he may have been killed over a drug debt.

Extensive land and water searches have failed to locate the father-of-three, who detectives believe could have drowned but are keeping an open mind into his likely demise.

It can be revealed the day before his disappearance he allegedly had an altercation with drug dealers in Waurn Ponds after accusing them of supplying him with tainted drugs.

His cousin, Sally-Anne Johnson, said Mr Johnson was a heavy substance abuser and was “clearly drug affected” at the time he went missing, but is disturbed by a series of events that “don’t add up.”

“We have evidence to suggest he may have been pinned down and held against his will,” she said.

“With the amount of CCTV footage in Geelong and to not have any trace of him, it just doesn’t feel right.

“We don’t understand how he has just vanished into thin air.”

It’s understood Mr Johnson had breached an intervention order in the hours before he went missing and was picked up by police crossing the James Harrison Bridge in Belmont.

He was taken to the emergency ward of the Geelong University Hospital because of his medical state.

He has not been seen or heard from since, and has not accessed his bank accounts or used his phone.

Geelong CIU Detective, Adam Radley, said they were not ruling anything in or out as they investigate the baffling case.

An extensive water search of the Barwon River, underneath the bridge he was walking across, failed to find his body.

“We know he left the hospital, there is footage of that, but then the footage ends,” Detective Radley said.

“There is CCTV footage of him wandering through the CBD, then we lose him.

“We can’t rule anything out.”

It’s understood some intelligence suggests he may have threatened to jump off the bridge, however his sister, Misty, does not believe he was suicidal.

Both the Barwon River and parts of Corio Bay have been searched.

Ms Johnson said the family had received a number of concerning tips, including to “check a shed” and that he was “stuffed into a boot”.

“We think he is dead,” she said.

“Whether he owed money, we know that he was not happy with his drug dealers.

“We understand he was no angel and has been running in the wrong circles for a long time, but he comes from a good family.

“We have checked everywhere and won’t give up on him.”

While not eliminating foul play, Detective Radley said there was no evidence pointing to it at this stage.

“There is nothing to ascertain exactly what has happened,” he said.

“We need new information and would encourage anyone to get in touch. We are all ears.

“The facts is we don’t know where he is at the moment, and we need to know to form part of the closure.”

Mr Johnson was last seen wearing a dark-green jumper, dark-grey tracksuit pants, and black Nike shoes.

He is described as being around 180cm tall, bald with a brown beard, and has a neck tattoo that says Jeremy Campbell.

Anyone with information into his whereabouts should contact Crime Stoppers confidentially on 1800 333 000 or the Geelong Police Station on 03 5225 3100.
