AN artist who went missing from Central Australia last month may have been given a lift in a vehicle shortly after he checked out of his hotel, police say.
NT Police said new information about Victorian man Sergey Bezsmertny had come to hand indicating the missing 45-year-old was seen on the Lasseter Highway on October 24.
The location he was seen in would have been about 20km from where Mr Bezsmertny was last known to have been, when he checked out of the Ayers Rock Resort in Yulara on the same day.
If he had been picked up in a car it would add to the mystery of Mr Bezsmertny's disappearance, as his backpack was found about 100km away on a salt lake on October 25, the day after he was last seen.
"Police believe that Sergey may have been provided a lift within this time frame," Senior Sergeant Michael Potts, from the NT Police Central Desert Division, said.
"Sergey was dressed in a long sleeved white shirt, blue jeans and possibly wearing a white shirt over his head in a makeshift hat."
Mr Bezsmertny was an artist who is believed to have been in Central Australia to paint pictures of the outback as he made his way up to Darwin from his home in Victoria.
Police began a search for Mr Bezsmertny on November 6, but suspended the ground aspect of the search three days later.
An aircraft search covered about 123 square kilometres around the location where his backpack was found, while people on the ground scaled an area about 0.5sq km
Police have not said why they called off the ground search for Mr Bezsmertny, who they hold "grave fears" for.
It is believed Mr Bezsmertny has not touched his bank accounts since his disappearance.
