Police renew calls to find a missing elderly man as part of Missing
Persons week
Posted
A renewed call has gone out to help find an elderly man who disappeared
last year in northern New South Wales as part of National Missing
Persons Week.
The annual Missing Persons campaign starts today and will continue for
the week.
Police are appealing for information to help locate 88-year-old Gerardus
Bakkenhoven, who went missing from his home in Iluka, last August.
Mr Bakkenhoven's daily routine included sitting on his balcony every
morning, before riding his bicycle from Iluka to nearby Woody Head or
Shark Bay to go swimming.
However, after he was not seen for a number of consecutive days his
neighbours contacted police.
Police conducted extensive searches of the local area, including Mr
Bakkenhoven's regular bike routes and favourite swimming holes; however,
they have failed to find any sign of him.
During a search of his home, investigators found his wallet containing
cash, his driver's licence, Medicare card and pension card, on his
kitchen bench.
Further inquiries also reveal there have been no financial transactions
since his disappearance.
