South Australian Police will scale back their search for missing 40-year-old man Benjamin a week after he vanished in the outback.

Benjamin was last seen on the Stuart Hwy between Glendambo and Pimbam in South Australia’s isolated Far North region, last Friday about 5pm.

He was travelling in a blue 2006 Hyundai Getz with WA registration plates 1IGG659.

PolAir spotted the vehicle in the scrub off the Stuart Hwy at Wirraminna on Saturday, but Benjamin was not found with it.

On Friday afternoon, SA Police Assistant Commissioner Ian Parrott said police would scale back their search for the man.

“We have dedicated consistent resources to try to locate Benjamin around the vehicle,” he said.

“This has included Polair, foot searches, also some First Nations trackers that we used.

“We did actually find some footprints and some tracks that were able to be followed, but they did not result in us being able to identify or find Benjamin at this location.”

Assistant Commissioner Parrott said the area presented “very tough terrain”.

“It is very tough terrain out there, very strong canopy cover so it is very difficult to locate someone in that region,” he said.

Police are now calling on the public to help them in their search.

He is described as caucasian, about 180cm tall, with a medium build.

“We are still seeking information from the members of public who may have seen Benjamin,” he said.

“His picture is on the Facebook page … just in case someone may have picked him up on the highway.

“We don’t have anything that indicates that at this point in time but we’re leaving every option open.

“We’re continuing to investigate these circumstances as we do and in due course it will be handled by the Missing Persons Investigation section.”

Despite extensive searches and inquiries, Ben has not been located.

Police appeal for anyone travelling on the Stuart Highway between Port Augusta and Glendambo between 11am and 2pm on Friday 26 September who saw Ben’s blue Hyundai or has dashcam footage of the vehicle to contact Crime Stoppers.
