Police reopen Cairns missing tourist case

Police are reviewing the case of a German tourist who vanished in Cairns 23 years ago.

Doris Trappe disappeared while taking a walk around the Cairns marina in February 1984.

Her husband Werner reported her missing a day after she left their rented campervan.

Detective Sergeant Jason Chetham says Mrs Trappe never left the country and police are in contact with German authorities.

"It will be hard," he said.

"I don't know if there is too many persons out there that would recall it.

"It did receive media coverage at the time.

"I guess we are just appealing for any information. We don't know what happened to Mrs Trappe.

"She could be alive and well somewhere. If that's the case we would like to conclude the investigation.

"Alternatively if people have other information then we will certainly act on it."
