Search for missing man near Sea Cliff Bridge starts

Officers from police rescue squads and the Marine Area Command, as well as members of the State Emergency Service ARE searching for 28-year-old Sakithivel Loganathan in the northern Illawarra.

Police have launched a land and sea search for a Strathfield man last seen at the Illawarra over the weekend.

Officers from police rescue squads and the Marine Area Command, as well as members of the State Emergency Service, began searching for Sakithivel Loganathan, 28, on Thursday morning after he was reported missing on Sunday.

Mr Loganathan, who works as a software technician, was reported missing by his flatmate at Auburn Police Station on Sunday night, with subsequent investigations revealing he was last seen at Scarborough Railway Station about 3pm on Sunday afternoon.

On Wednesday, Wollongong Police Detective Inspector Brad Ainsworth said the wet and windy conditions prevented a wide-scale search from getting underway.

“Unfortunately the weather hasn’t been too kind to us where we can conduct any land air or sea searches,” he said.

With clearer conditions on Thursday, search crews began combing land and sea near the Sea Cliff Bridge, and set up a command post on Lawrence Hargrave Drive.

The Marine Area Command searched waters between Scarborough and Coalcliff throughout the morning, while SES crews scoured the shrubbery along the cliff faces.

CCTV footage captured at Scarborough Railway Station on Sunday shows Mr Loganathan was wearing a grey jacket, dark blue tracksuit pants and a dark blue T-shirt with white stripes prior to his disappearance.

Detective Inspector Ainsworth said police held serious concerns for Mr Loganathan’s welfare.

“He was reported missing by his flatmate who indicated that he didn’t think he was in a real good head space,” he said.

Loganathan has no known associates in the Wollongong area and it is unknown why he is in that area.

He has not used his bank account since Sunday.

Anyone with information is urged to contact police.
