Police to follow new leads in Kain case

Police investigating the possible murder of a man on the
central coast say they will follow up new leads which have emerged over the past
few days.
A two day search of the Wyong State Forest has found no new evidence of
Nathan Kain, 34, who was last seen in Cardiff, near Newcastle, last July.
But police say the publicity surrounding the search has generated some new
information.
Detective Inspector Mark Henney says several people, including forest
workers, believe they may have seen a car the man was driving.
"We'll have to make contact with these people. They're going to have to
take us in and show us and describe the areas so that may take a little bit of
time, but following that we'll assess the areas for searching and perhaps
conduct further searches," he said.
"I would envisage that if we get fairly credible information that we'll
move on to searches."
Police search bushland for missing man
Wednesday, 31 January 2007 - ABC
NSW Police will search bushland on the central coast today for a south coast man
believed to have been murdered after setting off on a journey from Lake
Macquarie last year.
Nathan Kain, 34, was last seen leaving a friend's house in Cardiff in July.
It is believed he was heading for the central coast, but he has not been seen
since.
Homicide detectives will search the Wyong State Forest for the next two days.
Search for man missing since July
January 31, 2007 06:39am Article from: AAP
THE search for a man who is presumed dead will begin today on the NSW central
coast, police said.
Nathan Kain, 34, left a friend's house at Cardiff, near Newcastle on July 16 and
intended to drive to the central coast but has not been seen since.
A two-day search begins today in the Wyong State Forest by police and volunteers
from the State Emergency Service.
Police are searching for Mr Kain's body or evidence relating to his
disappearance, including the 1989 Mitsubishi Magna he was driving when he left
his friend's house.
Did going straight turn deadly for Nathan?

Nathan Kain had been in trouble with the law but was trying to get his
life back on track when he disappeared last year.
But before he could, police believe the 34-year-old was abducted and
murdered.
Today more than 80 police officers and volunteers searched a four square-kilometre
area of the Wyong State Forest on the Central Coast looking for his body or car.
He had been on a solo road trip in a blue 1989 Mitsubishi Magna,
travelling through Cardiff, near Newcastle, on the way to visit relatives on the
Central Coast on July 16 when he ceased contact.
A forest ranger found some of his belongings in dense scrub near a road in
the forest last December and a murder inquiry was launched.
Detective Inspector Mark Henney from the homicide squad said: "We believe
he has had contact with somebody and as a result he has been killed.
"He had some problems in his past. He was putting his life back together.
"He was doing all the right things and then suddenly he just disappeared
in suspicious circumstances.
"Everything we've looked at suggests that something troubling has happened
to him."
Mr Kain had been living with his parents at Sanctuary Point on the South
Coast and had caught a train from Bomaderry station on July 14 to Strathfield
where he stayed with friends overnight.
He continued onto Cardiff the next day and stayed with a friend who lent
him the Mitsubishi Magna.
He was last seen wearing three-quarter length grey camouflage pants, a
cream-coloured shirt and a white wide-brimmed Calloway golf hat. He also had a
black suitcase.
The search of Wyong State Forest is expected to take two days.
Anyone with information about Mr Kain, or who knows his movements around
July 16 last year, can contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
Police particularly request anybody who was involved in the collection of
abandoned cars in the Wyong State Forest and might have collected Mr Kain's car
to contact them.

Body
found in shallow bush grave
DAN PROUDMAN - SMH
March 16, 2010
An autopsy is under way after the partially decomposed body of a man
was found dumped in a shallow bush grave near Newcastle.
Bushwalkers with a dog found the grave in the Watagans in an
almost inaccessible part of the mountain range near Freemans Waterhole
on Saturday.
Crime scene experts spent two days at the grave site before the
remains were completely exhumed yesterday afternoon and taken away for
an autopsy.
Detectives are looking at recent missing persons' cases in a bid
to identify the victim.
Those cases include the suspicious disappearance of Cardiff man
Jay Riley, who has not been seen since leaving his house in Crockett
Street on December 14.
The 27-year-old has not touched bank accounts and his blue 1991
Toyota Lexcen remains missing.
However, the area's proximity to the F3 Freeway, the Central Coast
and the coalfields make the dense bushland a killer's potential dumping
ground.
Lake Macquarie detectives, who have been joined by Sydney-based
homicide squad investigators, are hopeful forensic pathologists may be
able to identify the remains today.
The fact that the remains were only partially decomposed has ruled
out any link with the disappearance of convicted bank robber Nathan Kain.
Kain is believed to have been murdered and his remains dumped in
the Watagans not long after he left a Cardiff house with the intention
of driving to the Central Coast in July 2006.
How long the remains have been in the bush grave might be
difficult to determine.
Many variables, including temperature, rainfall and the amount of
direct light received in the area all contribute to the rate of
decomposition.
The Herald understands
that the area where the grave was found was extremely remote and wet
from recent rain.
Lake Macquarie Local Area Commander Superintendent Craig Rae said
police had remained tight-lipped about the discovery for operational
reasons.
He said that it was still too early to speculate on any link with
local missing persons' cases.

Herald, Newcastle
*Editor's note - the remains were identified as
Jay Riley.
