Missing Indian national's family appeals for help after man last seen at The Gap

The family of a missing Indian national last seen at a dangerous coastal tourist spot on Western Australia's south coast are appealing to the public to help piece together what has happened to their loved one.

Parbhat, 24, was last seen in his vehicle at The Gap near Albany on the state's rugged southern coastline on Monday, August 5.

Despite a large-scale sea and land search by police and emergency service volunteers, there has been no sign of him.

The area, which draws thousands of tourists each year, is known for its dangerous coastline with 40-metre-high cliffs and frequent large waves.

Investigation into final movements

Parbhat's cousin Rahul flew from Melbourne to WA at the weekend to assist police.

He said his family are still searching for answers as to why Parbhat was in Albany in the first place.

Rahul said the family believed he was working in a restaurant as a chef in Perth before his disappearance, but little was known about his movements for the past six months.

"We're deeply concerned for his safety and wellbeing," he said.

"Parbhat's parents and our entire family in India are heartbroken, and they need answers."

Parbhat lived in Melbourne with Rahul, who is his only family in Australia, when he first moved from India.

He moved to WA three years ago to do a diploma in cooking.

Searching for answers

Police and the family are appealing for anyone with information on Parbhat's movements in the days leading up to his disappearance to come forward.

The last sighting of the 24-year-old was in his blue Kia Cerato at The Gap car park on Monday.

The discovery of his abandoned vehicle sparked the search which was called off intermittently due to bad weather along the coast.

Albany police Sergeant Vaughan Mackay said the investigation remains ongoing and the search could recommence pending any new information into Parbhat's whereabouts.

Deadly tourist spot

There are many warnings signs about dangers at The Gap detailing its cliff tops and potential for king waves and high winds.

At least six people have died at the site in the past 40 years.

Rahul said families like his need reassurance that enough safety measures are in place to protect others.

"The Gap is beautiful place, but it's dangerous place too,"
he said.

"From what I understand, there have been other incidents there in the past, and we believe there should be more, better safety measures in place."

Rahul said cameras could be installed and the site should be closed at night.

"We strongly feel that more cameras should be installed, and especially in such a distribution to prevent tragedy like this happening again," he said.

The Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions declined to respond to Rahul's comments, citing the ongoing police investigation.
