Police have declared the disappearance of 23-year-old
South Australian man Paulo Gorge Miranda a major crime.
Mr Miranda was last seen by a friend in Adelaide a week ago.
Police say his mobile phone is off and his car has been found burnt-out
north of Adelaide at Port Prime.
Detective Inspector Doug Barr says another cause for concern is that
some of Mr Miranda's associates are involved in the illicit drug trade.
"He's usually in regular contact with his family and friends and no
contact has been made since that time," he said.
"We've had mounting fears over the course of the last week and it's come
to the point now where we are concerned for his safety and welfare."

Police in South Australia say the disappearance of a young
western suburbs man could be linked to the illicit drug trade in Adelaide.

May 3.
His disappearance has been declared a major crime.
Detective Inspector Doug Barr says his family and friends have not heard
from Mr Miranda in more than a week.
"Paulo's mobile phone's turned off and his car that he was driving was a
silver Corolla, which was his brother's vehicle," he said.
"We located that on Thursday evening out at Port Prime north of Adelaide."
Detective Inspector Barr says there is cause for concern as some of Mr
Miranda's associates are involved in the illicit drug trade.
"These factors and a number of others have given us serious concerns for
his welfare," he said.

South Australian police have confirmed that blood found in a
house at Pooraka in Adelaide's northern suburbs belonged to Paulo Jorge Miranda,
who disappeared more than a month ago.
A park opposite the house was searched today for evidence, as was an area
at Port Prime, near where Mr Miranda's burnt out car was found.
Mr Miranda was last seen on May 3 when he left a friend's house at
Woodville and was reported to have been at a fast food restaurant at Croydon
days later.
Detective Inspector Doug Barr says the disappearance of the 23-year-old
from Mansfield Park is now being treated as a homicide investigation.
"A number of other factors, other evidence which we have gathered, leads
us to the inevitable conclusion that he has met with foul play," he said.
"The disappearance of Mr Miranda is, there's no doubt about it, related to
the drug scene.
"This is not a random incident, there are motives, there's a lot of people
out there who knew what happened and we would appeal for those people to come
forward and tell the police precisely what they know."

Five on trial over torture death
15:01 AEST Mon Feb 21 2011 - Nine MSN
Five men have gone on trial
accused of blindfolding an associate and torturing him to death over a drug
debt.
The body of Paulo Miranda, 23, has never been found but pools of his
blood and DNA were found at a gruesome crime scene in Adelaide that police
say is where he died, the South Australian Supreme Court was told on Monday.
Ngoc Thai Tran, 26, Chhay Ly, 27, Jean "Frenchie" Ngo, 22, Huan Hoang
Lam "Jimmy" Nguyen, 21, and another man, 19, who was a youth at the time,
have pleaded not guilty to the murder in May 2008.
But prosecutor Tim Preston says they lured Mr Miranda to a house in
Pooraka and tortured him to death over money and also because they suspected
him of setting Tran up for arrest.
Mr Preston said Mr Miranda bought methylamphetamine or "ice" from some
of the men but bad blood had developed with Tran believing he was owed a
significant amount of money.
So the five conspired to lure Mr Miranda to Pooraka where they
extracted his bank details by torturing him, during which they took a
picture of him blindfolded and bleeding from the head.
Police investigating the missing man were led to the Pooraka house, Mr
Preston said.
"What they discovered there was a gruesome crime scene," he said.
There was a pool of blood about 300mm by 400mm, bloodstained clothing
and gloves, and beanbags, disinfected bedsheets and other items, he said.
"The accused inflicted really serious bodily harm on him to extract
his pin number."
On Ngo's phone police found a picture of Mr Miranda in the bedroom of
the Pooraka house, Mr Preston said.
"In that picture the deceased is blindfolded and bleeding from the
head."
Mr Preston said a text message was sent to Mr Miranda's brother saying
he was in trouble with bikies and had to go on the run.
The trial continues.
