The search for a missing Queenslander has shifted to a remote corner of the Northern Territory outback, more than two months after he was last seen.
Caboolture resident Peter English, 37, last made contact with family on February 11 while driving to Mount Isa, in western Queensland.
He drove alone in a dark-grey Ford FG Falcon sedan, with the New South Wales licence plate FPV-849.
While police initially said Mr English may have gone north to Mackay or returned to the state's south-east, they now believe he crossed the Northern Territory border.
Today NT Police said investigations suggested his car was last sighted in the Tennant Creek area and may have travelled south towards Ali Curung.
They did not say when this possible sighting took place.
Tennant Creek is 661 kilometres west of Mount Isa on the Barkly Highway.
According to a statement from police it is out of character for Mr English not to remain in regular contact with family.
Mr English is Caucasian, about 179cm tall with a solid build, fair complexion, brown hair and hazel eyes.
It's not known what spurred Mr English's trip or how the possible sighting in Tennant Creek came to light.
Police said he was unemployed.
Anyone with information on the whereabouts of Mr English and his vehicle is asked to contact Northern Territory Police or Queensland Police on 131 444 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
The family of a Queensland man missing for over a year believe he is still alive and living off the grid – and have appealed for him to make contact.
Caboolture father Peter English hasn’t been seen since disappearing in the Outback over a year ago.
But not a day goes by that his family doesn’t hope to receive word he is alive and well.
The 38-year-old last made contact with his family on February 11 last year.
“We got a text from Mount Isa with a photo of him sitting in front of the ‘Welcome to Mount Isa’ sign and it just said ‘tick one off bucket list’ and that’s the last time we heard from him,” his father Gary English told The Sunday Mail.
Not long after Peter’s car – a high-performance Ford Falcon with the registration FPV-849 – was seen near Tennant Creek in the Northern Territory.
At the time of his disappearance Peter was struggling through a broken marriage and had recently lost his job at Boral Asphalt.
Gary believes his son is still alive, living somewhere off the grid.
“He loves the outdoors. He just loves fishing, shooting, dirt bike riding and I can just see him on a cattle property mustering cattle,” he said.
“Everything Peter loves I can see him just been right at home on one of those properties.”
But the family including Peter’s son Bryce, 7, and daughter Marli, 4, are desperate to hear from him.
“Just get in contact with us and let us know that you’re all right,” Gary said.
“Just let us know that you’re OK, happy, and that’ll give us satisfaction.”
“And for the kids to know their dad is OK and they might see him one day that would be great.”
NT Police are investigating whether the human remains found at a remote NT cattle station two weeks ago are those of missing Queensland man Peter English.
Mr English, 38, from Caboolture has been missing since February 2019 and was last seen in the Northern Territory having come through Mount Isa to the Barkly region, where he last contacted his family.
In August the Australian Federal Police highlighted Mr English's situation as the face of Missing Persons Week.
He left Caboolture early last year and had visited Mount Isa before driving to Tennant Creek in a dark grey Ford Falcon with NSW plates FPV 849.
He texted his parents a photo of the town sign for Mount Isa in Queensland on February 11, 2019.
"That's one ticked off the bucket list," he wrote.
His family haven't heard from him since.
Police confirmed he called in at the Barkly Homestead where he was last heard from though he was seen in Tennant Creek, believed to be heading south.
Two NT media outlets this week said a body was found last month on a station in the Davenport Ranges south of Tennant Creek and police were investigating under the assumption the remains are Mr English's.
