BACKGROUND:
John Henry Quinn was born in June 1932 and was working as a seaman on the vessel MV Iron Whyalla. He was the father of two children.
CASE DETAILS:
On Sunday 10 January 1982, Mr Quinn arrived aboard the vessel MV Iron Whyalla, in Port Hedland.
Mr Quinn went ashore and began drinking at a licensed premises in Port Hedland. Soon after, he was joined by a fellow crewmate. Mr Quinn had befriended two Aboriginal women at this location. After a quick drink, the crewmate left to return to the ship just after dark, as the ship’s crew were instructed to do by their superior officers and left Mr Quinn at the location with the two females.
Mr Quinn did not return to the ship that night and on Friday 15 January 1982, the ship departed Port Hedland. Mr Quinn had not returned to the ship by the departure date and a senior officer was notified. All of Mr Quinn’s personal belongings were still on board the vessel.
